How to read a padel racket spec sheet
Core, face, balance, thickness, surface. What each number means and which ones you can safely ignore.

Padel spec sheets are a mix of genuinely useful measurements and marketing that has been dressed up to look like measurement. Here is which is which.
Weight
Given as a range, usually something like 360 to 375 grams, because rackets vary in production. Most sit between 355 and 385.
Useful, but less useful than people assume, because it tells you nothing about where the weight is. Read it alongside the balance.
Balance
Sometimes given as a word (low, medium, high) and sometimes as a number in millimetres measured from the butt of the handle. The higher the number, the more head heavy the racket.
This is one of the most useful figures on the sheet and one of the least commonly published. Roughly: under 255mm is low, 255 to 265mm is medium, above 265mm is high. Head heavy means more power and more strain on the arm. Head light means faster hands and more control.
Core
The foam block inside the racket. Two families:
- EVA, in soft, medium and hard densities. Harder EVA returns more energy and lasts longer, and feels harsher. Soft EVA is more comfortable and slightly slower.
- FOAM (sometimes called soft foam or polyethylene). Softer again, very comfortable, more ball dwell time, and it goes dead sooner. Common on beginner and arm-friendly rackets.
The core matters more to how a racket feels than almost anything else on the sheet. If you only compare one spec across two rackets, compare this one.
Face material
Fibreglass or carbon, and carbon comes with a number: 3K, 12K, 18K, or occasionally 24K.
The K number refers to how many thousand filaments are in each carbon tow, so it describes the weave rather than the quality. Broadly, a lower K weave like 3K is a little more flexible and a higher K weave is stiffer and more rigid, though the resin, the layup and how many layers there are change this as much as the weave does. Two 12K rackets from different brands can feel nothing alike.
Which is a polite way of saying: do not buy on the K number. Buy on the core and the shape, and treat the face material as a rough guide to stiffness. Fibreglass soft, carbon stiff, higher K generally stiffer still.
Face finish
Smooth, rough, sandy or 3D. This is the texture on the hitting surface and it is what generates bite on the ball. We have a separate guide on whether it makes a real difference.
Frame
Almost always carbon fibre in some form. Occasionally you will see a tube or fibre count. In practice the frame material varies little across the mid and upper market and it is not a deciding spec.
Thickness
38mm is the legal maximum and virtually every racket is 38mm. When a brand lists it, they are filling in a row on a table.
Head area and holes
The face area is capped by the rules and the hole pattern varies a little between brands. Some brands claim their hole layout improves aerodynamics or flex. There may be something in it, but the effect is small next to core and balance, and it is not something you can verify from a spec sheet.
What is missing from every spec sheet
Durability, which is the spec most people actually care about after a season. Nobody publishes it, and reviews are the only real source. Rackets crack, cores go soft and surfaces wear smooth, and the rate varies hugely between models at the same price.
